If you’re a mom, I don’t have to tell you that sometimes motherhood is hard. Sometimes it’s really hard. Sometimes it’s so hard, we’re not even sure we can keep going. Can you relate??
Navigating behavior issues, refereeing sibling wars, meeting endless needs, answering a bajillion questions a day. Not to mention feeding them, clothing them, teaching them, and raising them the best we can.
It’s a lot. And some days, I’ve questioned whether I have it in me to do it well. Have you ever had those days?
The good news is, if we are Christian parents, we DO have it in us. Because we have the Holy Spirit in us. Which means we are never, EVER doing this mothering thing on our own. Can I get a “Hallelujah!”?
On those days when motherhood is hard, you’re exhausted, and you’re not even sure what to do next, pray these prayers. And believe that God will give you what you need.
He always does.
6 Prayers to Pray When Motherhood is Hard
Are you going through a challenging season of motherhood? Are you exhausted, frustrated, joyless, and run-down? Are you unsure what to do next and wondering if you can even do it at all? Here are 6 powerful prayers to pray when motherhood is hard.
Note #1: I’m using the psalms as models for these prayers. They certainly don’t shy away from or gloss over real emotions! They present honest feelings, but then hold them up to the truth of who God is and what He can/will do. That is what I have attempted to do in each of these prayers.
Note #2: For simplicity’s sake, I have chosen to use the pronouns “he” and “him” when referring to a child. Obviously, if you are praying for a daughter, you can replace them with “she” and “her.”
1. Pray for Strength
Lord, I feel weak and weary in motherhood right now. Each day seems to take everything I have to give, and then some. There are days I’m not even sure I can keep going. But I know YOU are my endless source of life and vitality. You never grow tired. You give strength to the weary and power to the weak. Lord, infuse me with supernatural energy. As I hope in You, I trust You will renew my strength.
Scriptures to meditate on:
- Isaiah 40:28-31
- Nehemiah 8:10
- 2 Corinthians 12:9
2. Pray for Provision
Lord, I feel insufficient and inadequate as a mom right now. I feel as though I never have enough – enough time, enough energy, enough patience, enough skill. But I know You are Jehovah Jireh – my provider. You are always enough, and You give me everything I need to abound in every good work. You provide all my needs, according to Your riches and glory, and that includes in my mothering. Lord, equip me with all I need for doing Your will. Produce in me every good thing that is pleasing to You.
Scriptures to meditate on:
- 2 Corinthians 9:8
- 2 Peter 1:3
- Philippians 4:19
- Hebrews 13:21
3. Pray for Wisdom
Lord, I’m going through a tough time with my child, and I don’t know what to do. But You do. You know him better than anyone, including me! You knit him in my womb, you knew him before he was even born, and You designed him on purpose for a purpose.
Lord, You said we could ask for wisdom, and I am asking for it now. Give me insight into his heart and mind. Show me how to connect with him, how to love him, and how to discipline him in a way that respects him and glorifies You. Tell me how to raise him up in the way he should go.
Scriptures to meditate on:
- Psalm 139:13-14
- Jeremiah 1:5
- Ephesians 2:10
- James 1:5
4. Pray for Perspective
Lord, motherhood is hard right now, and I’m lost in the weeds. I’m struggling to see beyond the challenges and my own weariness. Open my eyes to the blessings of motherhood. Soften my heart toward my children. Give me a God-honoring perspective on parenting, renew my passion for motherhood, and inspire in me a fresh vision of my purpose.
Scriptures to meditate on:
- Psalm 127:3
- Ephesians 6:4
- Deuteronomy 6:6-7

5. Pray for Love
Lord, I’m finding my child a bit hard to love right now. But I know this is when he needs my love the most. You ARE love; fill me with Your love that never runs out, so that it may overflow through me onto my child. Equip me to love him unconditionally and sacrificially.
Empower me to display love that is patient and kind, that does not envy or boast, that is not arrogant or rude. Love that does not insist on its own way and is not irritable or resentful, that does not rejoice at wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. Love that bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Give me insight to know how to love my child in the way he receives it best.

- 1 John 4:16
- 1 Corinthians 13

Lord, motherhood is hard right now, and I’m struggling to remain joyful. In fact, some days I feel completely devoid of joy. But when I feel empty, I know to run to you because in Your presence is fullness of joy. I turn to You for the deep, abiding joy that is not dependent on my circumstances. Fill me with joy everlasting. Keep my eyes fixed on You and my heart full of gratitude and worship. Help me enjoy this and every season of motherhood, even when it is hard, so that I may glorify You in my work.
