7 Ways (You Need) to Pray for Your Kids’ Teachers

August 1, 2022 By Lisa Mullen Leave a Comment

There are many ways to bless our kids’ teachers and partner with them throughout the year, but one of the best things we could possibly do is pray for them. As we approach the start of a new school year, here are 7 ways (you need) to pray for your kids’ teachers.

Our kids attend public school. As Christian parents, trust me, we are well-aware of the potential concerns of that placement. But we feel strongly this is where God has us for now. (We’re always open to change. We hold our plans with open hands!) Since He’s led us to it, we trust that He knows what He’s doing and will take care of our kids. After all, He loves them even more than we do!

But you better believe I arm them with LOTS of prayer.

There are several things I pray over them as they head off to school, but I invest a significant chunk of my time praying for their teachers.

Our kids spend several hours a day with their teachers, so their relationships with them are some of the most important and influential ones in their early lives. Plus, as a teacher’s daughter myself, I know how hard the job is and how much they need the support of intercessory prayer.

For those reasons and more, I started praying early this summer for my kids’ teachers, and I will continue to do so throughout the year. Following are some of the ways you can (and should!) pray for your kids’ teachers.

7 Ways to Pray for Your Kids’ Teachers

There are many ways to bless our kids’ teachers and partner with them, but one of the best things we can possibly do is pray for them. As we approach the start of another school year, here are 7 things to pray for your kids’ teachers:

Pray for the Right Placements

We know our kids better than (almost) anyone, and we want what’s best for them. So, it’s only natural we would want them to have the “best” teachers. But you know what? God knows them even better than we do. And He wants what’s best for them, too.

What’s more, in His all-seeing, all-knowing wisdom, He knows infinitely better than we do what’s actually best for them.

Knowing that, rather than worrying over or even manipulating which teachers our kids get, we can ask God to handpick them for us. They may not always be the ones we would have chosen, but we can trust God to make the right choice. Even then, we can rest in His wisdom, knowing that sometimes difficult situations are exactly what our kids need to see Him at work.

Regardless of who they are, praying over our kids’ teachers frees us from worrying and meddling, and ensures our kids will get the ones who will work out for their greatest good.

Pray for Their Hearts

Unless our kids attend a Christian school (and maybe even then!), they will likely have teachers who are not Christians. They may even have teachers who are ardently and vocally opposed to Christianity. I know I had some!

However, I don’t believe the right response is always to shield our kids from such teachers. Sometimes those experiences can be good for our kids (and their teachers!). At the very least, they are opportunities for us, as families, to pray for their hearts and to witness — with our lives and our conduct — the life-changing love of Christ.

And when our kids are blessed with Christian teachers, we can (and should) still pray for their hearts! We can pray that God will strengthen their faith, fill them with love for their students, and increase the fruits of His Spirit in their lives.

Pray for Wisdom, Insight, and Skill

Providing personalized instruction to dozens, or even hundreds, of wildly diverse students is an incredibly demanding task. It requires a tremendous amount of knowledge, experience, and wisdom.

Therefore, we should also pray that God will give our kids’ teachers supernatural wisdom and abilities. Not only to meet our kids’ particular needs, but also the needs of the class, as a whole. Pray that He will give them divine insights into their students and equip them with the skills they need to reach, motivate, and educate each child in their class(es).

Pray for Strength & Wholeness

Teaching is not an easy job (especially these days!), and most people have no idea how draining it can be unless they’re involved in it. That’s why we should all be praying for our kids’ teachers’ physical, mental, and emotional strength.

Pray that God will infuse them with energy and strengthen their bodies. Pray that He will protect them from illness and disease. Pray that He will quicken their minds and give them clear thinking. Pray that He will increase their emotional fortitude and equip them for every challenge. And pray that they will not grow weary in doing good (Galatians 6:9).

Pray for Your Parent/Teacher Relationships

If we want a positive and successful school year for our kids, forging strong partnerships with their teachers is key. We need them, and they need us! Growing up with a teacher mom, I saw what an enormous difference it made when parents partnered with her versus when they fought her.

With that in mind, let’s pray for unity between our kids’ teachers and us. No matter their particular beliefs, personalities, or methods, let’s pray that God will help us forge strong partnerships with them. That He will empower us to live in peace with them. And that He will use us to not only promote a strong parent/teacher relationship, but also glorify Him through our interactions.

Pray for Peaceful Conflict Resolution

When conflict does arise (as it very well might!) or we have an issue with our kids’ teachers (because we probably will!), rather than criticize or complain about them, let’s pray that God will help us resolve things peaceably. That He will rid us of defensiveness, bitterness, and anger, filling us instead with the fruits of kindness, gentleness, and love. That He will equip us to “be completely humble and gentle, patient with each other, bearing with one another in love” (Ephesians 4:2) and help us “be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave [us]” (Ephesians 4:32).

Pray for Teachable Spirits in Your Kids

While I spend a lot of time praying for my kids’ teachers, I would be remiss if I didn’t also pray for my children as students. Much of their relationships with their teachers and the success of their school years depend on their hearts, attitudes, and behavior.

Therefore, while we should absolutely pray for teachers’ hearts, minds, and abilities, it is just as important that we also ask God to give our kids humble hearts, respectful attitudes, and teachable spirits. Finally, let’s pray that our kids will conduct themselves in ways that bless their teachers, minister to them, and provide honorable testimony to the love and light of Jesus.
