Sending my son into the big wide world of public education is a little scary. I’m not going to pretend it’s not. I struggle with mom fear in general, so the temptation to worry and ask all the “what-if” questions is very real.
But we believe the public school system is where God has us for the foreseeable future. And so, we commit ourselves to being intentional about teaching him and training him at home, and then covering him in lots of prayer when he leaves.
Today, I’m sharing with you the 6 areas of blessing and protection I pray over Aidan throughout the school year. I have left blanks for your children’s names in case you want to use them, as well!
And by the way, these prayers aren’t just for public school kids! There are very real temptations in Christian schools, too. And every student, whether public schooled, private schooled, or homeschooled, will be blessed by being covered by these prayers for their school year.
6 DYNAMIC PRAYERS FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR
Be a light
Lord, I pray that _____ will be a light to those around him/her at school. Infuse him/her with courage and boldness to stand up for what is right and good. Strengthen him/her to resist temptation and set himself/herself apart from ungodliness. Help him/her to be in the world but not of it. And lead him/her to be the hands and feet of Jesus, showing the light and love of God to all around him/her.
Protection from darkness
Lord, protect _____ from darkness in the world. Give him/her a discerning spirit from an early age to distinguish between right and wrong, good and evil. Help us build a godly foundation at home and fill him/her with spiritual knowledge, equipping him/her to fight the darkness in the world. And lead him/her to come to us with questions whenever he/she hears things that go against what we, or the church, have taught him/her.
Academic success
Lord, I also pray for _____’s academic success. Prime his/her ears and mind to receive instruction. Quicken his/her mind and understanding. Instill in him/her a desire for diligence, and bless his/her efforts. Finally, I rebuke anything, namely diseases and disorders, that try to hinder his/her education and steal his/her love for learning.
Friendships & relationships
Lord, I ask that You bless _____’s friendships and relationships. Give him/her wisdom to choose his/her friends wisely, and discernment to know who should be in his/her inner circle. But also open his/her heart to reach out to others who may be different from him/her, including the marginalized and unaccepted. Help him/her be kind, loving, generous, and compassionate to all.
Respect for & obedience to authority
Lord, give _____ a spirit that respects and obeys those in authority over him/her. Quicken his/her conscience when he/she feels the urge to defy or rebel. And helps us model this respect for authority in our speech at home.
Health
Finally, Lord, I pray for good health for _____ this school year. Strengthen his/her body and his/her immune system, and protect him/her from sickness and disease.
