My second baby, Andrew, is 2 1/2 months old now, and while the beginning was a bit rough for us, things are starting to settle into place. He’s less fussy, I’m getting a bit more sleep, and we have established at least some semblance of a routine. Now that I’m not quite so much in survival mode, I’m really enjoying having a baby in the house again.
This month’s “What I Love About Motherhood” is about enjoying that baby phase and getting to experience all the fun “firsts” all over again.
At 2 1/2 years, our older son, Aidan, is certainly still experiencing firsts of his own. He is growing up and reaching new milestones that are fun and exciting. But no year is as full of change as that first year. Every single day seems to bring change, growth, and new developments, and the baby of one month is completely different than the baby of the next. The first year goes by so quickly, and I didn’t savor moments as much as I should have the first time around.
With Andrew, I get to experience the fun all over again. In the last couple weeks, Andrew has starting smiling and cooing more, and has even laughed once. I love that sight and sound! It is a lot of fun to watch the outward signs of their mental development. And there is just nothing in the world like the sound of baby laughter.
Starting all over with another baby has certainly had its challenges. The sleeping, the nursing, the fussiness. But it also means I get to relive all the precious moments, like the snuggles and the cooing and the “firsts.”
Motherhood is very hard at times. But it is also very wonderful. And what helps me get through the tough moments is recognizing, appreciating, and treasuring the delightful. Like hugs, “I love you”s, and baby giggles.
With the new baby came a recommitment to savor the season. To relish everyday moments, record them for posterity, and simply take time to take it all in.
To help me do this, I’m going to give myself a challenge this week. Every day this week I am going to:
- Take at least one picture of the boys.
- Write down at least one funny or sweet thing Aidan says.
- Reflect at day’s end on my favorite thing about the day.
Will you join me in this challenge? If you would like to join me, let me know in the comments! At the end of the week, I will tell you in my newsletter how I did, and you can reply and let me know how your week went!
Tune in next month for another round of “What I Love About Motherhood!”
