A Prayer for Sibling Relationships

September 29, 2016 By Lisa Mullen Leave a Comment

It has always been a hope of mine that my kids would have strong, healthy relationships with each other. To that end, here is a prayer for sibling relationships I have started praying.

A Prayer for Sibling Relationships

Earlier this month, I gave birth to my second baby boy, Andrew.

We were a little unsure about how Aidan was going to adjust to the new intrusion in his life. For the first 6 months or so of my pregnancy, he was not at all excited about it. Anytime we talked about the baby, he would say, “No! Stop it!”

With just a couple months to go, he started to change his tune. All of a sudden he started getting excited about the baby, hugging my tummy and talking to it. (Here’s what we did to encourage this change.)

This gave us hope that maybe he would like being a big brother after all!

But I was still a little nervous. Aidan was used to getting lots of attention, especially from me, and he was quite a momma’s boy. He also doesn’t typically deal well with change, and a new baby was going to bring about a LOT of changes!

His reaction to his little brother, however, has been better than I ever could have expected! He absolutely loves Andrew. He wants to hug and kiss him every time he sees him, and he’s already very protective of him. Whenever Andrew cries, Aidan races to his room to “check him.” And when we ride in the car, Aidan sings to him and says in a soft, gentle voice, “Settle down, Andrew,” when he cries.

I know it won’t always be this way. Once Andrew is old enough to play with Aidan’s toys, I have a feeling Aidan’s patience will take a hit, and his words won’t always be as tender as they are now.

But for right now my heart is full seeing the love that Aidan has for his brother, and I’m enjoying every minute of it. He is making the transition from only child to big brother better than I could have hoped for, and I love watching him take that role seriously.

A Prayer for Sibling Relationships

It’s always been a hope of mine that my kids would have strong, healthy relationships with each other. I want them to get along for my own sanity, sure, but also so they grow up with a strong support system. I desire for them to grow up in a family filled with love and encouragement.

Because this is a big desire of mine, I’ve started praying for God’s help. Here is the kind of prayer I’ve been praying:

Dear Lord,
I pray for a strong bond to develop between my children. I pray that each of them will be firmly rooted and confident in Your love for them, so that that love may overflow in their relationships with each other. I pray that they will appreciate their differences and learn to live in harmony with each other.

Lord, I pray for patience and strength in Aidan as the firstborn. I ask that you help him be compassionate and kind toward his brother. And help him be a good role model to him.

Help Andrew show respect and honor to Aidan as his older brother. Give him wisdom to know when to follow and when to forge his own path.

And Lord, give me wisdom to know how to foster a strong relationship between them. Give me patience when they struggle to get along, and help me model the grace they will need to extend to each other. God, show me how to teach them self-control, kindness, and forgiveness so that they can be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Help me grow in love for others so that I can model that to my sons.

In Jesus’ mighty name,
Amen.
