For as long as I can remember, I have struggled with fear. Fear of harm, fear of failure, fear of what others think about me, the list goes on. When I became a mother, it ushered in a whole new arena of possible fears.

For the last year or so, I’ve been working on dealing with these fears. I know from 2 Timothy 1:7 that the spirit of fear is not of God, and is, therefore, something that I need to eliminate from my own spirit. I’ve been studying fear, speaking against fear, and determining not to let fear keep me from obedience to God’s will for my life!

Philippians 4:6-7 – Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

John 14:27 – “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.”

5 Powerful Prayers to Combat Mom Fear

If you regularly struggle with fear as a mother, know that you are not alone! Let’s fight this battle together. Join me in praying the following five prayers for common mom fear.

Fear over My Children’s Safety

Lord, I pray divine protection over my children – over their health and their safety. I thank You, Lord, that You are their refuge and place of safety. I thank You that you rescue them from every trap and protect them from every disease. I can rest assured knowing that You cover them with Your feathers in the shelter of Your wings. Though a thousand fall at their side and ten thousand die around them, those evils will not touch them. No evil will conquer them, and no plague will come near our home. I can be at peace knowing that Your angels will protect them and hold them up with their hands. I know this because You have promised it in Your Word, and on that Word I stand.

Scripture Used in This Prayer:

  • Psalm 91
  • Isaiah 43:1-3

Fear of Inadequacy

Lord, I often fear that I am not good enough to raise my children. There are days that I feel inadequate and unprepared for motherhood. But I know that is a lie from Satan. I know that Your grace is all I need. Your power works best in my weakness, so rather than fear my inadequacy, I will rejoice in my weakness knowing that Your power works through me. I know that I am not inadequate in You, because You, Lord, are my strength. You make me as surefooted as a deer, able to tread upon the heights. I can be the mother my children need because I can do all things through You. You give me the strength I need for this role You’ve called me to.

Scripture Used in This Prayer:

  • 2 Corinthians 12:9
  • Habakkuk 3:19
  • Philippians 4:13

Fear that I Will Mess Them Up

As I worry that I will make mistakes that will cause my children irreparable harm, Lord, I take comfort in knowing that You cause everything to work together for the good of those who love You and are called according to Your purposes. Though I will make mistakes as a mother, I trust You to work all things together for the good of my children. I will not be a perfect mother, but I trust You to fill in those gaps. I thank You for Your Word, which I can use daily to guide my decisions and help me raise my children in the way they should go. Your Word prepares and equips me to do all You’ve set before me in motherhood, and it will provide me with the wisdom I need. Finally, I thank You, Lord, that You supply all my needs according to Your glorious riches, including the need for wisdom, guidance, and confidence as a mother.

Scripture Used in This Prayer:

  • Romans 8:28
  • 2 Timothy 3:16-17
  • Philippians 4:19

Fear That They Will Stray From The Faith

Sometimes even children of Godly parents stray from the faith of their upbringing, and I admit that I sometimes fear my children will not follow the Lord. But rather than live in fear, I will direct my children onto the right path and pray that when they are older they will not leave it. I pray that they will grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ so that they will come to know You intimately, not just know of You. I pray for the right Godly influences in their lives to come alongside them, support them, and encourage them in their walk with you. Move in their hearts to choose their friends wisely, and give them wisdom to know what is right and beneficial and what is wrong or detrimental to their spirits. Open their eyes to see You, and stir up their hearts to desire more of You. I pray that they will strip off every weight that slows them down and the sin that trips them up. I pray that they will run with endurance the race You have set before them.

Scripture Used in This Prayer:

  • Proverbs 22:6
  • 2 Peter 3:18
  • Hebrews 12:1

Fear of What Others Think

Lord, I admit that I worry far too much about what others think, and I repent of my tendency to place higher importance on man’s opinion than Your opinion of me. I do not want to be like the Pharisees in the Gospel of John who loved human praise more than the praise of God. Lord, help me set my mind on You. Remind me often that I am working for You and not for people. Put a check in my spirit that corrects me when I seek wisdom from man before I seek it from You. I choose this day to do everything I do as a mother for Your glory, and not for the approval of people. I make it my goal for my children and those around me to see Christ in my mothering, not to win Mother of the year.

  • Galatians 1:10
  • Colossians 3:23
  • John 13:43
  • 1 Corinthians 10:31

Thank you Lisa! I am a prayer warrior…for others. I struggle with my own prayers and often feel less important to pray about myself. It is wonderful to have moms like you for this encouragement. – Carlen

That is such a good point – moms have a tendency to think their needs in general are less important than the needs of others, don’t they? I remind myself all the time that taking care of myself is actually enabling me to better take care of my family. So it’s not selfish, and it IS important! 🙂

Wow! You are a very talented writer, Lisa!

I was encouraged by your post! It had me thinking about a sermon I heard about prayer. The pastor challenged us to find a written prayer that we like and read it every morning for a month. I just found my prayer(s)! Thank you.

I can relate to every fear in this blog post. I also appreciate the scripture reference for each prayer. Great post! Keep up the awesome writing.

Wow, thank you for the kind words! I’m deeply touched. They are fears that I deal with regularly, so the post was very much inspired by my own struggles. That’s a great prayer challenge! I have several prayers that I pray regularly. I love Stormie Omartian & Germaine Copeland books, and I read their prayers quite often.
Thank you for the encouragement – it blessed me greatly!

I am new to your blog but am so glad I found it!
As I read these powerful and profound prayers I wish I had them when my children were young. Although my boys are grown, these fears have not nor ever will go away.
I am an Army mom now and having my eldest away in foreign lands has instilled a fear I never knew.
Praying these prayers immediately calmed me. I know God is with him as he fights for our freedom. I know pride is a sin but I am a sinner and I am proud of my children.
For all moms out there, prayer is the only way to calm those emotions that overwhelm you.
Love is a powerful thing and God loves our children more than we do.
Thank you for your understanding of us mom’s. It always helps to know your not alone.

I truly can’t imagine being an Army mom. How proud you must be of him, but oh so concerned, as well! I am always calmed when I remember to turn my worries over to God. He brings a peace like nothing else, that is for sure! I don’t know how I could mother without Him!!

Thank you so much! I was thinking it was going to just be prayers for the kuds. I started praying and every time I got to the next prayer, I was like thank you God, I know you love me, because each prayer was sweat I needed. I always worry about messing my kids up, what people think and will my kids truly have a relationship with God. God, has truly saved my life and life is so much harder without God in your life. I will definitely pray these prayers everyday. I need to truly start living and believing what God says about me. I love you my sister! May God continue to bless you and your family!

Thank you! That’s so wonderful to hear! I knew when I wrote this post that if I struggled with these fears, other moms must also! It was truly the Holy Spirit speaking through me to other moms.
