My Secret Weapon for Kids Who Hate to Get Their Hair Washed

June 2, 2016 By Lisa Mullen 4 Comments

Oh. My. Goodness. I’ve been just itching to write this post because it was such a game changer for us! If you have a toddler (or baby) who hates getting his hair washed, then this is the post for you!

My Secret Weapon for Kids Who Hate to Get Their Hair Washed

Aidan used to be great about bath time. As a baby, he loved his baths, even the hair washing part.

But at a year or so, he suddenly started HATING having his hair washed. It was like a light switch, it was that sudden. He loved the playing part and tolerated the body washing part, but washing his hair was pure torture for him … and us!

It took both of us to wash his hair. One person had to hold his head back and hold him still while the other did the rinsing.

We tried putting his head directly under the spigot, which seemed to calm him slightly, but that still required more hands and strength than I had by myself.

We were desperate for a solution.

I tried soothing & cajoling voices, I kept a dry washcloth handy, and I tried teaching him to close his eyes.

Levon took the tough love approach of letting the water pour over his face thinking that it would teach him to tilt his head back. Nope. That only further freaked him out!

We had heard about bath caps, like this one, but Aidan doesn’t always like to keep things on his head, so we really doubted he would tolerate something like that being on his head during an already stressful time for him.

And we we had seen ads for rinse visors like this splashguard visor, but that would still require one hand to hold the visor in place, one to pour the water, and one to hold him in place (yes, that last one is necessary!) … and if I’ve done my math correctly, that equals three hands, something even mothers have not figured out how to invent yet!

So when we saw this Shampoo Rinse Cup (here’s a similar one on Amazon), we thought maybe we’d finally found something that might work. At under $10, it was certainly worth a try!

Oh my gosh, we struck gold! This rinse cup is a gift straight from Heaven, I’m telling you!

This little cup made a night and day difference in bath time! There were NO tears, NO fights, and NO struggles!

It kept the water out of his face and allowed us to finally thoroughly rinse the front of his hair without traumatizing the poor boy.

He enjoyed the entire bath experience, and so did we! Best of all, it’s no longer a two-person job!

We are so thrilled to have finally found a solution to our bath time woes.

If you have a toddler or baby who hates getting his or her hair washed, give the Shampoo Rinse Cup a try!

It worked wonders for us, and it’s so affordable, you won’t be out much if it doesn’t work for your little one.

**Update: We got ours at Babies R Us, which is no longer in business, but here’s a similar one on Amazon!

I don’t know what it is about getting their hair washed that they hate so much – I loooooove getting my hair washed at the salon! 🙂 But it sure makes bath time a struggle! I’m thrilled that I can pass on something that worked so well for us – hope it helps your little guy, too!

Great advice, Lisa. Our oldest at 2 years old hated to get his hair washed also. Now, thankfully all ours are ok at this stage in getting their hair washed. If I encounter that trouble again, I will definitely consider buying this!

It’s encouraging to hear that they do eventually grow out of it! 🙂 I’ve been amazed at the difference this little bucket has made!
